Engagement: South Philly

Jen & Mike are an amazing, quirky, caring and fun couple.  Jen found me randomly through pinterest and we began a long series of email exchanges having mostly nothing to do with either photography or weddings!  Before having met them in person (for pizza, of course!), I felt that Jen and I were already friends.  We share a deep love for pizza, animals and vegetarianism.  We also both met our spouses “online”.  On top of all of that, Jen is a very open person as you can see by reading her intriguing blog: http://www.byjenlawson.com.  We ended up connecting on even deeper levels concerning grief, loss, family, etc…  Needless to say, after all of our exchanges, I was excited at the opportunity to work with these two!

The hard part about photographing a great couple like Mike & Jen is, well, photographing them and not just hanging out, sipping beer, laughing and sharing deep thoughts together.  Ha!  Seriously, I think that I could talk to these two all day.  As expected, I easily clicked with Mike as well and felt like the two of them were just so easy to get to know and to be around.

That all said, when I did back away, it was great to see and capture their deep love for each other and for their fur family as well.  We wandered in and around their home in South Philly and just enjoyed the day!  I got to meet 2 of 3 of their adorable cats as well as their sweet little dog, Sassy.  We also spent time at their favorite local beer stop, The Bottle Shop, which has a lot of significance to them.  It was a great day overall and I am excited to share these captures with you!009 015 016 020 021 022 026 030 035 040

Jen was teaching Mike the art of "squinching". Squinching "describes the action of squinting your eyes in such a way as to portray confidence and self-assurance as opposed to the fear and uncertainty that you project when you stare wide-eyed at the camera." It's very hard to do and very funny to watch someone try!
