One word for “nieces and nephews”???

As I started to write a blog about my Sister’s family I realized that there should be a one word term for “nieces and nephews” or maybe just a gender free term.  A word like….. cousins.  Does this word exist??

I had to stop writing and focusing on the original blog to look this up.  Apparently, I am not the only person that is perplexed by this!  There are no known terms (according to my short google search), though I did discover the made up terms:  “Nibling” (combo of sibling and the “n” in niece and nephew) and “Siblings Child”.  Clearly the latter is just a random description which isn’t really what I was looking for.  I could have just then said, “my sister’s three children”.

Other combo words just don’t sound that good or seem to be grammatical….. “niecephews”, “nephieces”, “niephlings”.  Any suggestions?  Let’s get this in the dictionary!!

Since I am on a kick…. I keep writing “niece” “neice” by accident.  I realize that it is incorrect but it just rolls through my fingers to the keyboard easier or something.  I have to remind mysef of the rule:  “i before e, except after c”.  wEIrd rule, huh?

Okay… I will probably post the photographs of my “niblings” tomorrow now.  😀

  1. This conundrum has been bothering me, too. The best I’ve come up with is “kin,” but there has to be better.
